I want those Internets!
“Give me a website! I wanna see those Internets on my desk by 9am Monday!”
A great line I heard from a friend last night - now, I’ve no idea where it comes from, but it tickled me because it’s not so far from the truth. Managing a website isn’t easy. There’s about a zillion technologies to deal with and an awful lot of acronyms. We techno types deal with this technology all the time, so we need the acronyms to shorten what we talk about.
It’s not about excluding you, dear reader, or anybody else. Just like any industry, a shorthand is necessary because a nice lengthy explanation of everything is impossible if you want to get on with the work. In a typical day here we’ll use HTTP, CSS, XHTML, XML, RSS, SMTP, POP, IMAP, FTP and a dozens of other acronyms. And that’s before we even get into the usual jargon where we “break apart the nodes, distribute it across the layers and slice it into divs.”
However, with a good web design company you need to come in with a business requirement. That’s it. And it can really be as simple as “make us more money”, “make us look cool” or even “let the world know about our neat products.” Then decide how much you can afford to invest in your online presence, and discuss with your web design company ways to make sure that the spend is worthwhile. A beautiful website isn’t, for example, much use if nobody knows about it.
So let us worry about those pesky Internets, and you worry about your business. Our job is connecting the two sides together. That’s what we do, and we do it well.
