Website Types
One thing a lot of people don’t realise is that there are many different types of website. They can be integrated into one address - with matching look and feel and common log-in. However, it can be convenient to think of all the types of website separately, what they mean, and what they can involve.
The Brochure Site
One of the most common sites is one which acts as a brochure for a company’s products. Usually these sites are more slickly designed than general corporate sites.
Many organisations will link their corporate site to specific product websites, often with different addresses to the corporate site. A product may even have multiple sites if it’s targetted at different market sectors, countries or demographics.
Budgets are sometimes high for product sites - the design is often unique and distinctive to the product, slick, and may use varying technologies. It’s not unusual to have six or even seven figure budgets. Of course, smaller organisations have all sorts of options.
Example Site:
The Corporate Site
It goes without saying that large organisations often run large websites. It’s not necessarily the case, of course. Berkshire Hathaway is worth a fortune and runs a simple, cut-down website that we could build for a three figure budget. However, their corporate workings don’t really require anything more complex.
A corporate site may have various sections.
Investor Relations
This section would cover information useful to investors in the corporate - share prices, financial figures, news from the boardroom, etc.
Product Area
A company needs to promote its products, and these should be easy to find from the corporate site - even if the corporate maintains multiple websites. After all, an interested customer may have inadvertantly stumbled upon the corporate site.
Directory
Most corporates have many different points of contact - a well structured directory will help hugely to allow customers to find the right person within your organisation.
Jobs
A jobs section will help prospective employees to find you and apply for roles within your organisation. CV submission and resumé/applicant management is possible, as well as integration with corporate recruitment systems such as provided with PeopleSoft.
